Material Characteristics
The standard hydrocarbon resins, derived from C5, C9, or C5/C9 feedstocks, are valued for their excellent compatibility, tackifying properties, and ability to enhance adhesion and hardness. Key characteristics vary by grade, including light color, low VOC content, and specific softening points to meet different formulation needs. The hydrogenated hydrocarbon resins undergo a further chemical process that saturates their molecular structure. This results in significantly superior properties, including exceptional thermal and UV stability, very light color (often water-white), and enhanced resistance to oxidation and chemicals. This makes them ideal for applications requiring high performance and long-term durability.
Material Applications
The application of these resins is directly linked to their characteristics. Standard hydrocarbon resins are widely used in industrial sectors such as hot-melt adhesives (HMA) for packaging, rubber compounding, road marking paints, and waterproofing membranes. They provide essential tack, strength, and water resistance. The hydrogenated versions, with their high stability and purity, are critical for more demanding uses. They are essential in pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) for tapes and labels, hygiene products, cosmetics, and high-performance coatings where resistance to yellowing and degradation is paramount.
